I didn't realize the alarm on my cellphone had a setting that early. We had to be at the Charter School at 7 to caravan with all the other participates to the Science Fair at ULM. Micah's project is How to Control the Speed of a Computer with hardware changes. He was the second one judged but we don't know how he did yet. The judge stayed with him a long time and asked a lot of questions; they say that is a good indicator. Sure hope he did well. If he did, it means a trip to Baton Rouge for the state contest. That will be a trip. Anything for the kid though; know what I mean. Besides, he made a 95 on his last Spanish test and he hates Spanish, but is doing much better. So, we're going to treat him today. Probably take him to his favorite place to eat; Eastern Empire.

Other than that, must finish making preparations for the weekend. I am preaching a short series on Jesus' last words of instructions to His disciples from John chps 14-17. That is a well of instruction and inspiration. Hope I can do it justice. I just ask the Lord to use me for His glory in all that I do.

Everyone have a blessed day. It's hard for me to get motivated to blog. Many times I have some thoughts (yes, I actually do, sometimes). But I just can't seem to get them to my fingertips. Maybe I'm just lazy. My dad and I were talking about that yesterday. We get comfortable just sitting and watching the world go by and don't want to move. The older I get the more that seems to be true. But I still have so much to do, I can't let that happen. If you've been reading Jessie blog (www.jessieandthewhiterock.blogspot.com) then you'll see real motivation in action. I don't plan on running any marathons, although that would be a lofty goal. I still have the unction to finish our house. Oh, there is still very much to be done there. But above all to see God glorified in my life in whatever I'm doing.

Wonderful things are happening at Dunn Baptist Church these days. God is continually blessing there. I know He isn't through with me there, nor is He finished with the wonderful Body of Christ.

Thank you Jessie for the encouragement! I appreciate you young man and thank God for you! Push on, you'll make it. And thank you Brooke for the encouragement to me yesterday.

Everyone have a blessed day in the Lord.

Youth Camp and Other Things

Thoughts on Youth Camp
Last week was a great week for those of us who went to Youth Camp. We were at Tall Timbers Baptist Encampment just below Alexandria; it was officially called "Clear Camp." All of our youth had a great time, as did the adults who went with them. It was not only fun, but also spiritually enriching for all. I want to say thank you to those adults who went: David and Annette, Cindy and my wife Anita. A special thank you goes to Jessie who is our Youth Minister at Dunn Baptist Church. All of you did a fantastic job. Plans are already in the making for camp next year. Stay tuned for details on that.

Youth camp is always and exciting time, especially for the youth. It is a time to get away from home and parents, even though those are certainly missed. They get to meet new people, some of whom become life-long friends. During times of recreation they get to play ballgames of various kinds, and in our case, got to get muddy several times.

The worship services for youth are unique or at least different for most of our youth and adults. For those of us who come from a church which worships in a "traditional" style, it is an opportunity for our youth to get a little hyper, to say the least. Worship services at Youth Camp and at any Youth meeting in general, is loud. Most of the kids like that, but as I get older my tolerance for loud music has, shall we say, diminished. I have been know to leave the room a time or two when it got just a little too much for me. I did find out that they will provide ear plugs for anyone who asks. That ought to tell you something about the noise level in the services. But, all in all, worship at youth camp is a good experience and generally very moving for our youth. Several decisions were made to receive Christ as Lord and Savior this year; not by any of our youth, but by other churches. We did have some re-dedications as we call them made by some of our youth. I look forward to seeing the fruit of those decisions.

Last night our youth led our evening Worship service at church. Again, they did a very good job of it. We saw the camp video and some pictures of our youth as they enjoyed camp together. Then they gave some testimonies of their experiences at camp, which we all enjoyed. Our youth also performed a skit, which they themselves had written. It was fantastic with a great message. We look forward to seeing more of those. That was actually the second one they had done.

The hightlight of the night for me was to baptize two of those youth. They had made professions of faith during Vacation Bible School, but we baptized them on this Youth Celebration Night. It was amazing. We look forward to assisting and watching Taylor and Audrey grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Pursuit of God
On another note, I have been reading and teaching one of my favorite books of all times; a classic in my estimation: "The Pursuit of God" by author A.W. Tozer. I have always suggested this book to any of our church members or anyone esle for the that matter. I'm going to post of what are to me hightlights of the book.

Following Hard After God
This is the title of the first chapter of the book and also the theme of the book. Psalm 63:8 says, "My soul followeth hard after thee; they right hand upholdeth me." (KJV) Tozer, first of all, rightly points out that before a person can seek God, God must first have sought the person. The bible teaches us in Romans 3:11 that "no one seeks after God." Tozer says, "We pursue God because, and only because, He has first put an urge within us that spurs us to the pursuit." John 6:44 teaches us "No one can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him." In this working out of our salvation, God has set us on a path which not only leads to heaven, but even more importantly to a life long pursuit of the One who was first of all pursuing us. It is a personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ which becomes the most important relationship in our lives. If it is not the most important relationship, then something is wrong. Christianity should not be "mechanical and spiritless," as Tozer says. It should be vibrant and alive.

Tozer says, "The moment the Spirit has quickened us to life in regeneration our whole being senses its kinship to God and leaps up in joyous recognition." We have been "born again" by the Spirit of God, but that is not the end of it; it is only the beginning or and "inception" as Tozer puts it. Now begins the glorious pursuit, the heart's happy exploration of the infinite riches of the Godhead."

There are two quotes that am going to end with today. The first is from St. Bernard, an ancient theologian quoted by Tozer. The second is Tozer's prayer at the close of the first chapter.

"We taste Thee, O Thous Living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drind of Thee, the Fountainhead
And thirst our sould from thee to fill."

Prayer
O God, I have tasted They goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace.
I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me They glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away." Then give me grace to rise and follow thee up from this misty lowland where i have wandered so long. In Jesus' name. Amen.

News from Youth Camp

We arrived yesterday at Youth Camp. We are at Tall Timbers Baptist Camp just south of Alexandria. Except for a shredded tire on the trailor the trip was uneventful, which is a good thing. We did get some rain when we got to Alexandria and it rained on and off all afternoon. But, the rain was a blessing for I know that many people here in Louisiana needed it. Of course it cooled things off too, and we all enjoyed that as we began our week at camp.

We've had breakfast this morning and are getting ready for Morning Celebration. The kids enjoy that, but I'm getting just a bit old......the LOUD music is almost more than I can stand now adays, but I will endure. Then we have Bible study. I'm really looking forward to our adult bible study times. It is always interesting to see how our teacher presents the Word of God to us at Youth Camp. I know that we will all be blessed and learn something. Pray for us to that extent.

How the Summer Is Going

Family News
Well, here is a little catching up in my family. Our son Micah will be in the 10th grade at the Delhi Charter School this year. That is really incredible to me. He is such a young man now; Anita and I were discussing the fact that he will only be at home with us three or four more years before he goes out on his own. May the Lord guide him in his decisions for the future. Of course, he spends about as much time at the Nielsen's as he does at our house.

The other two sons and their families are doing fine. Matthew and family are still in Kingsville, TX. Matt has about 3 years left in the Navy. Future still yet to be determined for them. The grands have been to camp already this summer and Abby (the youngest) is just a growing up. We sure hope we can see them before school starts again. Marc and Dixie are still in Lafayette. They are going to Florida in a few days with friends to celebrated their anniversary. Happy Anniversary to Marc and Dixie and Matthew and Monica whose anniversary is also this month.

Anita and I are doing real well. In our 37 year of marriage and growing closer each and every day. We were talking about some things we would like to do in the near future and we haven't been able to do up to this point. We are going to reach a financial goal next month!!! Hooray!!! It's been a long time coming! Here's a piece of advise - STAY AWAY FROM CREDIT CARDS!! End of lecture there, except to myself.

House Renovations
Things are coming along slowly but surely with the house. We now live in the house as of January of this year. Our most recent renovation is new floor to almost ceiling windows in our bedroom. They look really nice. We still have to do the crown molding and later this year or early next year new floors. Also, a new air conditioner was installed in the wall (I framed it in there instead of a window since it couldn't go in a window). Yard mowing continues.

Vacation Bible School
We had a great time at VBS this year. Dunn Baptist church averaged 140 this year. The boys, girls and leaders had a great time. We had two professions of faith and one young lady wanting to join our church by letter. Looking forward to next year alreay. The theme will be "Saddle Ridge Ranch."

Logos Software Bible Camp
I attend this last week in Shreveport. I use two bible software programs for my study: Logos and Wordsearch. Logos/Libronix is my primary software. I really enjoyed the two days and learned how to more effectively use my bible software for study and sermon preparation. The results are already being enjoyed.

Enjoy the Day
Looking forward to a time of study here in my study at church. Later we'll join with our family of faith for Prayer and Business meeting. May the Lord bless each of you with a wonderful day!

New on Facebook

Okay, so it's been a while...sorry about that. I guess I need to make more time for my blog and now for my Facebook page. I just want you all to know that I am on facebook now...look for me. I want to use this "new" technology to help me stay connected with my church family, help them keep up with my doings and also to touch base with other in our community and world. An added bonus is that I can keep up with or catch up rather with some old friends. I've already found some of my high school class mates. That's exciting to me also. So, stay tuned for this page, as well as my facebook page. Isn't technology exiting!

Also something else going on is that I've started a new online study with the Founders Study Center. It is a study on how to Maintain Your Spiritual Walk. The main textbook for the course is entitled "Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health" by Donald S. Whitney. He is a professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I'm completing the first chapter which is wrapped around the first question, "Do You Thirst For God?" Wow! Talk about getting straight to the point! I want to warn you, if you want to study this along with me (see Founders.org and click on the study link) it could cause you to actually think about your walk with God. I'm really looking forward to it.

Also looking forward to church tonight. It is always good to be in God's house with God's people. I especially like it when we can pray together. So, have a great evening!

A Week At Centrifuge

What a fantastic week I enjoyed at Centrifuge last week. Anita and I went with our youth to Ridgecrest, NC for an eventful week. The Lord really blessed us all. Jessie asked each of us at the beginning of the week what we hoped to get out of our week there. As for myself, I wanted to hear from the Lord! Life here at home is usually so full that, believe or not, even as a minister I don't talk time to hear from the Lord as I should. I had (took?) more time at the camp. I didn't go to recreation a single time during the week. I didn't climb that hill with our youth and the adults not once. I don't feel bad about that at all. Not that I didn't desire to be with our youth and watch them participate in all the events that youth do at youth camp (I HAVE done them all before, several times). I spent the time with the Lord and my study books. And I did hear from the Lord. It isn't just youth which are re-vived at camp. It was great! I needed that time, not only with our youth and leaders, but more importantly with the Lord.

It was exciting watching them. And the Lord moved among them in several ways. We had three, that I know of, who made professions of faith and several recommmittments to the Lord. We have some good leadership potential in our group also. I look forward to watching this group of youth mature.

I also want to thank the Lord for our youth leaders. Jessie, you are doing a great job for the Lord! Of course, I know you couldn't do it without your wonderful wife Gina. David and Annette, you are just awesome! How thankful we are for the ministry the Lord has given you. Also thanks to the other adults who went with us and through whom the Lord moved; Scott and Brooke, it was a joy getting to know you better and spending some quality time with you. And the two big guys, Eric and Cody, man am I glad that you were there. I praise the Lord for you two guys. Finally we had a young and upcoming leader in Brittany. It's always good to see our future leaders emerging. Glad that you were able to be with us Brittany.

One thing that I guess is showing my age, I guess that is what it is......I didn't quite enjoy the music as I have in the past. Maybe it was just the band, I don't know. I'm not saying that they were bad, I guess I like my music a little more mellow now. But, the kids enjoyed them and if they were led into real worship, that is all that matters.

Well, that will do for now. Maybe more about the week later. We certainly look for results to come from the week. We'll wait patiently to see what the Lord will do with our youth and leadership. BTW, our youth will present a program about the week this coming Sunday evening. Hope all can be there.

The Fear of the Lord

I am writing from my Number 8 motel room. That is what our youngest son Micah always called the motels he preferred when we were traveling when he was younger. It was either a number 6 or a number 8. There was no other. And he could see those numbers miles down the road and would want to stop at every one of them.

Anyway, here I am. It has been the first evening of the Ark-La-Tex Southern Baptist Founders Conference. So far, it has been amazing. The theme of the conference this year is "The Fear of the Lord." I can't wait to be able to put into practice of that which I am being reminded or am learning. Two verses real quickly..."The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom;" "Fear the Lord and keep His commandments...this is all that is required of mankind." Fantastic! You'll be hearing more about this later.

Just a couple of other things. Our doctrine reading group is doing really well. We have 14 people meeting at either 6 am or 7:30 am on Tuesday mornings to read "Bible Doctrine" by Wayne Grudem. I really appreciate those who have been so faithful. I've heard nothing but good things so far. I am amazed at what God is doing in our fellowship. Although it is only 14 of us, I believe that God is going to do some amazing things through our group! Hang in there doctrine readers! Not only are you going to continue to learn and be blessed, you are going to be a blessing to our church.

I look forward to this coming Lord's Day, as I do each and every one of them. I am concluding our study in the Book of Hebrews. I only have two (I think) more sermons that I will preach from Hebrews. Both of these will be Resurrection sermons. Thank the Lord for His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection! Let's be being prepared for Resurrection (Easter) Sunday.

Everyone have great night.... or day as you read this. I love you all.

Bro. I am just amazed that there are some people who are willing to meet that early in the morning to read theology. Fantastic! May our number increase! I will be posting here some of the discussion questions and maybe some other little tidbits for our group and others to read. If you would like to join us, it is not too late, but you need to join us ASAP.

This week is just flying by. I can't believe it's Wednesday afternoon already. I need to prepare for tonight's bible study for our Praying Meeting. I have begun a study in Proverbs. It is going to be a wonderful study I believe. The portion of scripture I was reading is from Matthew 17. It told of how Jesus had taken Peter, James and John up on a mountain where His glory was revealed before them. Also present were Moses and Elijah. That must have been an incredible sight! Peter certainly thought so. "Let us build monuments to this moment!" He missed the whole point of the moment, just like many of do most of the time. But, it didn't stop there. They had the privilege of experiencing the "Shekinah" glory of God, of being not only with Moses and Elijah but with Jesus in all of His glory unveiled. Talk about a "mountain top experience!

Then the moment was over. They returned to reality, as we all must do. Immediately there was a ministry opportunity. Having come from such an experience they should have been ready for anything; but they were not.

They met a man who had a demon possessed son. Apparently Jesus' disciples had tried to help, but could do nothing for the young man. Jesus delivered the young man from the demons and immediately he was well.

When the disciples were along with Jesus they asked Him why they could do nothing for the young man. I'm sure they tried earnestly tried, but had also earnestly failed. Jesus told them that they reason they could not help the young man was that, and I quote from "The Message" translation as I have been reading the bible through this time, "Because you're not yet taking God seriously." They could not help the young man because they weren't taken God seriously. Now, I'm sure they thought they were taking Him seriously, but Jesus said they were not. Jesus went on to them them about faith the size of a mustard seed being enough to move mountains. I'm sure they were shocked to here they didn't even exercise the smallest amount of faith they thought they had.

I really think that a lot of Christians don't really take God seriously. They think they do, but they do not. Therefore they can't even exercise they smallest amount of faith. I know that I have fallen into the category so many times. God help my unbelief!

Let's begin to take God more seriously. If we see our lives, our ministries as failures, maybe, just maybe it's because we don't really take God seriously. Repent and believe today.....along with me.

New Year Commitments

Last night at our Wednesday evening Praying I presented God's Guidelines for making a plan, taken from this months "In Touch" devotional by Charles Stanley. My point was this: we need to make some concrete commitments for this year of our Lord 2008. I don't call them Resolutions because, in my estimation, resolutions revolve around what I can do of and by myself. Commitments are really about what I want God to do through me. For instance, many will resolve to become better off financially by getting out of debt. That indeed is a worthy resolution. That is one that my wife and I made about 5 years ago. We are not quite there yet, but we're getting there. Did that happen because we just decided to do it? Only partially. We did it primarily because we wanted God to be glorified in our lives and that we can participate in ministry financially. We have not been able to do this just because we decided to do it. I know myself well enough to know that would not work; history shows that. We did not resolve to get out of debt, we made a commitment to God to get out of debt. Having done that, He empowered us to do so; He provided the resources to do so. As we continue in our commitment, God is being glorified in that commitment.

The same goes for any commitment you want to make. Make that commitment to the glory of God, not just for your good. The wonderful outworking of that commitment is that it will result in your good.

I've already read a couple of other blogs that speaks of commitments that many make during this time of year. One blog said that we should commit ourselves to be in God's Word this year. That is a resolution that many make, but being only a resolution, most fail. Commit yourself to bringing glory to God this year by reading His Word through. There are lots of resources to help you do so.

I've started once again to read the bible through this year. I'm going to do it on my computer this year. I use a couple of Bible software programs in my studies, one of which is Wordsearch 8. Their website is www.wordsearchbible.com. It is an excellent program. Anyway, that's the way I'm going to read through this year. I'm reading 3 chapters of the Old Testament, 1 Psalm and 2 chapters of the New Testament each day. Also, as you read, don't forget to make notes (get you a bible you can write in if you don't already do so) as you read.

Eveyrone have a great day in the Lord. I'll write more next time on commitments for this year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Well, it is 12:30 am, January 1, 2008. It has been almost a year since my last post. I can only say that much has happened in my life and ministry since my last post. I would just say that I thank the Lord our God that He has been with me and my family through it all. To God be the Glory! I am excited about the New Year and all the possibilities. I know this: God is sovereign and He is in charge. That brings my much joy and blessing. I pray it does for you too.

I would like to say that I'm going to be more faithful in every area of my life for the Lord. Is that a New Year's resolution? No, it's a prayer to God to help me to be more faithful. I know a couple of things for sure about what the Lord has done in my life this past year. He has brought me closer to Him and more aware of His purpose for my life. There are other areas of my life that are doing much better also, not only for my good, but for God's glory. May we all listen more carefully and act more faithfully to the voice of God.

We began the New Year with several of our church members here at Dunn Baptist Church. We had a good crowd come and go during the evening. I thank God for each and every one of them. Of course, we began the year in prayer. What a marvelous time of fellowship we have together.

Of course we also want to commit ourselves to even more time in prayer and to read God's Word through once again this year. (If you have never done so, please make that commitment to yourself and to God right now). Another thing we are going to do together this year is that several of us are going to gather together at 6 am one morning a week a read theology together. I have had several people tell me that they would like to do that. We are going to use Wayne Grudem's Biblical Theology If you would like to join us, let me know. I can order the book for you for $25 or you can get it yourself. We'll set the time in just a few days.

That's all for now. I know anyone reading this will be playing catch-up because you will not know that I have started blogging again for a couple of days at least. Hope you enjoy it. And remember to encourage me to keep blogging.

Have and Blessed and Happy New Year everyone!

Resurrection Sunday

As I reflect on the events of the day, I can say with all sincerity of heart that I enjoyed every moment of the day. It was a long day to be sure. We started with our 7 AM Sunrise Service, which we held in our new Prayer Garden at Dunn Baptist Church. There were between 50-55 people present for this event. I am thankful for every one of you who attended despite the fact that the temperature was about 45 degrees! What a glorious celebration it was!

But more important than any of us feeling that we enjoyed the events of the day is that the Great God of Heaven and Earth be glorified. From the wonderful Sunrise Service to the morning worship where our sanctuary choir performed "Because He Lives," God was glorified and our Lord Jesus Christ was exalted. And speaking of the Easter Musical, our choir did an outstanding job! I have heard so many say how wonderful it was. Good going choir! We really appreciate you!

Also the Prayer Garden dedication was a vital part of the early service. We said there that the Prayer Garden was not just for a place of beauty, or even quite. It is a place of prayer. Anyone is invited to stop by and spend time in prayer. Our Heavenly Father desires that we spend time with Him everyday. We can do that anywhere, but how wonderful it is when we can spend a few moments of our day in a place such as a Prayer Garden. Please stop by anytime.

Of course, we also had opportunity to spend time with our families. We enjoyed the time with my dad, step-mom, my sister and family. We also spent time with some of our church family this afternoon. We enjoyed every minute.

I know it's been a while since I have written, but just wanted you to know that I have been taking an online course entitled "How to Maintain a Healthy Church." This course is found online at www.founders.org. Stop by there and check out their site and read about the courses which they offer.

Speaking of studies, I will be continuing my expositions through the Book of Hebrews and will also be starting a study in the Book of Romans soon. Stay tuned.

Everyone have a blessed day in the Lord!

Training For The Heart

Life In The Spirit
We've been having a great time in our Discipleship Training Class on Sunday Evenings. About three weeks ago we started studying the LIFE course called "Life In The Spirit." What a grand study! The study in broken down into weeks and days, requiring about 30 minutes a day for the student of God's Word. Although I taught this course once before about 8 years ago, it is refreshing to go through it again. From time to time I hope to include in my blog my thoughts on this subject. After all, this is an online journal and our course suggests that each of us "journal" our thoughts, prayers and questions as we go through the course. So, it's very appropriate for me to do so. I am already looking forward to next Sunday evening as we continue our study of Life in the Spirit. My theme verse for this study is Galatians 5:25, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." That is exactly what we are learning to do.

Spring is one its way
As I was coming back into my office, I was noticing how beautiful it is outside. This is a wonderful time of year. The temperatures are beginning to warm up, at least here in the south. I know there is still more winter to come, but not as much as there was. Indeed, what a wonderful time of year that it is.

Baseball is also on its way
Since it is almost spring, that means baseball is coming also. As a matter of fact I remember an old movie entitled, "It Happens Every Sprinp" and of course, it was about baseball. I like football and basketball to some extent, but it is baseball that I really like. I wouldn't say I love it, as a real baseball fan would, but I do really like to watch a good baseball game. I like it even better when I can attend a game at the stadium. I plan on attending a couple of major league games this year with my friend and brother in Christ Jessie and his family. We are going to see the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros and probably some college ball as well. Then when we can't be at the game, there is always the television. I can't wait to hear, "Play Ball!" See you there!

Back to the study
Well, I'd better get back to studying. I pray that everyone has a blessed day in the Lord. Remember to tell someone about Jesus! God bless you all with a good day!

Mid-South Men's Rally

Preachers Need Encouragement Too
Last night I had the opportunity to attend the Mid-South Men's Rally in Jackson, Miss. I was invited to go by Pastor Paul Lipe of the Delhi Presbyterian Church. As happens so many times, as the time approached to meet them at the church all kinds of excuses crept up within me not to go. "I had other things to do;" "I really don't feel like it;" "Will this really be beneficial to me;" and of course, "I really don't want to." Thank the Lord that virtue won out over laziness and I took the plunge.

How often we don't realize how we need encouragemnt and edification. We think that we are doing just fine by ourselves. After all, "I'm the preacher. I don't need encouragement; I don't need to learn anything. I'm supposed to be doing that for others." I have found out so many times that you can't keep giving and giving and not receive something for yourself. Or sure, I study, mostfly for sermon preparation and not nearly enough time for personal devotion - that means just time spent with God for no other reason than to spend time with Him.

I am so glad I was able to go!
What a blessing it was to go. The fellowship was wonderful. Along with the 8 or 9 from Delhi Presbyterian, there were 1000 or so men at the rally. I did feel a little outnumbered as a Southern Baptist among all those Presbyterians.... lol.... but it was still a very enjoyable time. After all, they are brothers in Christ. I appreciate our Presbyterian brothers very much, especially those of the PCA, of which Delhi Prebyterian is a member. Actually, last year Al Mohler who is the president of Southern (Baptist) Seminary was to be the speaker and next year he will be the speaker. I'm already looking forward to that. I pray that some of the men of our church will be able to go. I'll let all of them know when this wonderful event occurs next year.

The speaker was Dr. Harry Reeder who is the senior pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL. He was a wonderful preacher and brought a message on leadership, particularly male leadership. It was very interesting that his illustrations from leadership were Christian men who served in leadership positions during the American Civil War. General Robert E. Lee was his prime example. I learned so very much not only about General Lee, but about leadership in general.

Here are six principles about leadership that I learned last night:

A. Three Non-negotiable tasks of Leaders
1. Leaders must know their mission and relentlessly be committed to achieving it.
2. Leaders must always take care of their people.
3. Leaders will intentionally replace themselves with more leaders.

B. Three Non-negotiable Traits of a Leader
1. Competancy - Leaders develope their skills
2. Content - Good leaders know their stuff
3. Character - Leaders are men of character. "Circumstances do not define character, they reveal character and become the opportunity to refine it."

A little self-evaluation
As I listen and continue to apply what I heard last night, I am both humbled and just a little humiliated by the truths I either learned or of which I was reminded. May God help to become the man of God and the leader that He wants me to be. At the same time I confess to those to whom God has given me a charge that I have not been the leader that I should be. I feel so very inadequte for the task. But I know that God is the enabler. As I have heard before, God always provides the resources for the taskt to which He has called us.

Church, please pray for me as I grow in our Lord Jesus and as I grow to be the leader that He wants me to be.

Thank you heavenly Father for you call to salvation and to service. Thank you for the life I have in You, for the hope that is within, for the gifts you have given, for Your presence during every moment of my life. Help me to live the life to which You have called me and to use the gifts which you have given me all to Your glory and for the good of the people to whom You have given me charge. I love you Lord Jesus.

I'm Back!!

I'm Back. All of this writing taxes my brain!! But, just like those spiritual disciplines, I know this is really good for me. So, come back every day or so and check to see if I have anything new to say. Not that it will be new, but at least let you know I'm still on the planet.

So, until then, everyone have a great day. Be sure and check back tomorrow. We've had a great week here at Cross Camp. I believe that God has been able to do something in the live of all of us. It is my prayer that whatever God has done in each of our lives will be lasting.

Mending Broken Lives
Last night during the worship service and our church devotion time, we focused on the relationships we have with one another in the body of Christ. We are a community of faith. We are to care for one another and support one another. When things get out of balance, as with a disagreement, we are to make it right with one another. Last night was an opporunity to do that. Annette Ford did an interesting thing as part of our devotion. She gave each of us a sock. Not one of those little short dress socks, but one of those long sport socks. We put if on our arm and it looked like a cast, as if we had a broken arm. Then were went around the room and wrote something on each other's "cast." Something positive, something that would affirm. It was a very special and a very affirming time for all of us.

We have one more night of worship and another church devotion time. I'm really looking forward to it to see what God is going to do. I hope all who are reading this will pray for us and God is able to do something really special in our presence.

Traveling Tomorrow (Saturday)
Please be in prayer for us as we travel tomorrow as we head home. We should be home shortly after noon. May God's hand be upon us. We've been praying for you all back home also. We look forward to seeing you all once again. Until then, may God bless each one of us.

Live From Cross Camp Day 2

Everyone is Doing Well
For moms and dads out there, just to let you know your kids are doing well. We're having a great time. Our youth are making new friends and getting to know one another better also. There have been no problems as of yet, which is quite an accomplishment in and of itself with a group like this. Each youth was assigned a "Family Group" by the camp staff. It consists of youth from all churches so that the youth don't stay together all the time. They have bible study together and activities that usually coincide with the bible study of the day. Evening worship, which starts in about an hour, is exciting. Our kids seem to be enjoying that just fine. We also have church group devotion following evening worship.

Devotion Time
The theme for the week is choices. Last night Mrs. Anita (church momma) shared with the kids. One day maybe she'll share with everyone a bad choice that she made as a senior in highschool that lead to her being in a car accident. Tonight is my night to share. Please be in prayer for our kids as they react to one another and to God as He prompts them.

Praying for You All Back Home
We'll be praying for everyone tonight as you meet for praying meeting and our children's mission activites. You pray for us. We miss all of you and will see you on Saturday. I'll try to write more tomorrow. God bless you and keep you.

Live from Cross Camp

We Arrived Safely
I'm writing from the men and boy's dorm at the University of Central Arkansas, where CrossCamp 2006 is being held. We are in Conway, Arkansas. The weather is fair and not too hot. We arrived on time and are all checked in and we are well fed, having just finished a fine supper. We had orientation this afternoon and everyone seems to be ready for an exciting week.

We have 27 of us here, including 18 youth and 9 adults. Some of the younger and first time youth campers are still a little unsure of themselves, but the will adapt. I and the rest of the adults are ready to see what God is going to do this week with our kids. Please be in prayer for us.

Evening Worship
Our next event is in about27 minutes. We have evening worship. If you have never been to a youth camp worship service, you have really missed something. It is exciting! Many of us aren't really used to the music, but make no mistake, it is about Jesus and is intended to lift our youth to the Lord. It is generally loud and fast. But, it also brings us to worship. Pray that our youth will experience true worship of the Lord this evening.

Day Starts Early
The schedule is full all day long. They really keep you hopping here. We will start our early, well some of us will, with an early morning devotion. Most of our youth will still be asleep when that occurs, but I know that I enjoyed it last year. Pray that all of our youth or most of them anyway will want to join us in this early morning time with the Lord. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.

Everyone have a great evening and keep coming back to this page to see what is happening here at youth camp. God bless and you each one.

Going to the Beach

Just a short note for today. We're getting ready to go to South Padre Island for a day at the beach. We've had a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast and orange juice. Now we're ready! I'm not a big beach fan, but once every 5 years or so is okay. Actually, it's been two years I think since we last went to a beach. That was Holly Beach with you Young at Heart group. We always had fun there, but hurrican Rita took care of that. No more Holly Beach. We miss it.

Anyway, they are all telling me we need to go, so ya'll have a great day and we'll do the same. Maybe I will blog about how the beach was later. See ya in the water!

Live From Texas

We're On Vacation!
We are having a wonderful time in Kingsville, Texas with the family of our oldest son, Matt, and his family: wife Monica, children Morissa, Cody and Abigal. We just got our of the swimming pool. Nothing like a refreshing morning swim. Ahhhhhhhhhhh! It is pretty warm here, but I don't think it is any hotter than it is at home.

Matt and I worked in his yard yesterday morning. He had pruned the limbs of his mesquite trees, then it started raining. He didn't get to mow his yard for a couple of weeks. Soon he had high grass with piles of limbs mixed with them... It was a mess! But, we got it cleaned up. There is still lots to be done, but we got him over the hump.

Yeah, I know....It's Been a While
You may be saying....."Why don't he write?" I guess I got really really lazy... I lost my motivation. Nothing like a little time away to get your mind back in gear. Sure, I miss everyone back home. But is sure is good to get away for some R&R. So, while I'm writing this morning....

Fantastic VBS!!!
We had a great Vacation Bible School a couple of weeks ago. One of the best every I think. We had good average attendance, about 125 or so. And our kids and adults gave a love offering of over $700 for our Louisiana Baptist Children's home and our missionaries to Israel, Timer and Mary Ann Hartley. Great going everyone!! I want to personally thank everyone who lead or helped us in our VBS this year. You all did a awesome job! We're already getting pumped for next year's VBS. We're going to play baseball!!

New Discipleship Training Series
We will begin a new series this coming Lord's Day evening. IT is a study concerning the Kingdom Authority which we have through our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a video series authored by and with Dr. Adrian Rogers. Dr. Rogers has had a tremedous affect upon not only my ministry, but also with my personal walk with the Lord Jesus. I'm really looking forward to this, and I pray many of you will be also.

God bless you all with a great day!
I'll try to write again tomorrow... right after our morning swim. Keep cool everyone. My family and I love you all!

Later Spring/Early Summer

Where Have Your Been?

I'm back. No excuses, just been doing a lot of thinking and praying lately. I'm trying to figure out who I am in the Lord Jesus. You ever been there. We think we have it all figured out and then something or somethings happen to change our minds. Well, it's happened.....again. It just confirms that God IS at work in me. And that's a good thing. Sometimes.....many times.... we may not like where that takes us, but we go nonetheless. It is exciting and frightening at the same time. God encourages us to hang in there. He IS in control and we WILL arrive at the correct destination, maybe not in the exact way that we have planned or when we have it planned, but God will complete what HE started. Hey, isn't that a bible verse. Oh yeah, my favorite one. Did I forget? Philippians 1:6: "He that began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Incidently, Paul began that verse by saying, "I am confident of this very thing...."

God's Promises Never Fail
We can be confident that If God started the work, He WILL perfect the work. Let's see, did God start a work in me? Yeap, I remember it well and there IS evidence that He is in my life, so yes He did start the work. And I know that His promises never fail, therefore, I know that since He did start the work, He is going to perfect or complete the work. So far, so good. It's that inbetween part that scares me. Doesn't it scare you? Lord help my faithless ness. Help me to completely trust in You. Okay, today I'm trusting. I'm not going to worry about tomorrow or condemn myself for yesterday. I'm trusting you today. Please take care of me!

How's The Weather
Up till now, we've had a great spring. But as we get closer to summer, the days get hotter. I just wished those spring days would hang around a little longer. We got all of our screens today. So, all the windows are open. But, it's almost too late to enjoy open window time. We'll just enjoy them as long as we can....before we have to turn on that air-conditioner.

Ballgames
Micah has been playing ball every Monday and Thursday for over a month now. His team, the Red Sox, are doing pretty well. Jason Nielsen's team, the Yankees, are in first place. They are undefeated. Congratulations guys! Our Red Sox are in second place with one defeat and that to the Yankees. Our second game with them was rained out three weeks ago. The Red Sox and the Yankees play tomorrow night at 6 PM. What a game it should be. Go teams!

Vacation Bible School
VBS is coming up very soon. We're excited about it. It's going to be an Artic Adventure. I hope everyone has planned on being there. If you have not, especially if you are a kid, mark you calendars for June 19. We're going to have a great time.

Current Studies
I'm going to be preaching a short series on the office of the Deacon. We are going to begin the process of setting aside several men for consideration as a deacon. I'm going to preach on the need and the requirements for the Deaconate.

Also continuing our studies throught the Revelation. This Sunday we will be in Revelation 5, The worship of the Lamb. What an exciting subject. Please join us.

Everyone have a great day in the Lord and hope to see you tonight at Prayer Meeting. God bless you greatly.

The Refiner's Fire

Have you ever been through the Fire?

I've been preaching through the Book of The Revelation lately, as most of you know. Yesterday I preached from Revelation 3:14-22, The Message to the Church at Laodicea, The Lukewarm Church. Even though it was a "hard" sermon, it seemed to have been well received. To only be the glory for that, for it is His Word. As always I pray that our great and glorious God and Savior was lifted up and glorified in that sermon, as with all sermons. After all, it is about Him and not about us. But then, it is about us, in a manner. That is, it is about our lifestyles as "Christians." God's family is to demonstrated the character and glory of God. If we both corporately and individually don't do that, then God will chasten those whom He loves, those who belong to Him.

Many of us may not think that we look like Laodicean Christians. I know that most of the time, I do and from what I have observed concerning the church, not just ours, so do most Christians. We become self-satisfied and complacent; we become......lukewarm. But, I'm not trying to preach that sermon again, although, I know I need to hear it.

Gold Refined by Fire
The Refiner, in this case our YAHWEH God, would have us to be of the purest quality. Gold can only come to be that way by the process of refinement. The impurities must be removed. The only way that the impurities can be remove it to be placed upon the fire. The impurities rise to the surface where they can be removed. Why this process? The impurities and mixed in with the gold itself. They are not a part of the gold, but the are so intermingled with it that something extreme must be done in order to separate the impurities from the gold itself. Also those impurities and hidden. That is, most of them cannot be seen with the untrained eye. The gold may look fine; it may even look good enough. But the assayer knows the difference.

Our Heavenly Assayer
God knows the difference. He knows the impurities in our lives and He doesn't want them to be there. So, He puts us through the same process of refinement. He places a fine beneath us and turns up the heat in order that the impurities, that is those things that are not like Him, are separated from our very being, rise to the service and can be removed from our lives.

Gold doesn't care when the heat is turned up under it. It doesn't feel a thing. But we do. Most of the time it is a painful process. It brings discomfort into our lives. It even brings changes in our lives. Most people that I know do not like change. Change brings us out of our comfort zone.

One other thing the refining process does
The refining process causes us to look beyond ourselves. It causes us to look for help. We don't have to go through the process alone. The first one we can and should look to is the refiner. He knows just how much heat to apply. He isn't going to do anything that will hurt you spiritually. He know how many impurities exist in our lives. He is in control of the whole situation. Oh God, help me to remember that! Help me to trust You as you refine my life.

He also gives us families. I thank God for my family, especially my wife. She has been there for me through thick and thin. In many ways she is stronger than I am. Thank you Lord for my wonderful wife Anita.

God also gives us one another. I thank God for my brothers and sisters in Christ. I love you. I especially thank one of you who listened yesterday, who beared my burden with me. Thank you for your love and support and advise. Thank you for helping me remember not to worry.

God is Refining My Life
Yes, I and my family are going through the heat right now. Pray for us please. God is at work in our lives and that is a good thing. As we read from the Word yesterday we are to "buy from God gold refined in the fire." There is a cost involved. Nothing is free, save for our precious salvation, and that really wasn't free. It cost the Son of God much in order that we might be in right relationship with God.

Pray for us and we'll pray for you. Have a great day everyone!

Angola Prison Rodeo

Senior Adult Road Trip

Tomorrow Anita, Micah and I will be going to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola to attend the yearly rodeo which they hold. I can't remember ever going, although my wife and my dad tell me that I have been there. Ususally I remember things that I have done long ago better than I remember what I did today, but such is not the case this time. Anyway, we are going with our Young at Heart group. This is going to be a great time, although a long day. We leave early in the morning and will not be home until late I don't think. Please be in prayer for us as we travel.

Thank the Lord for the Good Rain
We got a good rain today and Oh how we needed it. But our gracious Lord knew that and gave us just what we need when we needed it and when He wanted us to have it. Aren't we so very grateful for this wonderful rain.

I was out at Anita's family place. I had to do a little pump repair and did a little more cleaning up around the yard. I got the old tiller out and got to till up a small vegetable garden place, before the belt broke on the tiller. But at least I got it done. Now, I'm almost ready to plant some tomatoes and maybe a few other things. We'll see. John and Margie Thomas planted about 60 tomato plants I think, and would have plenty for us. But, isn't it great just to watch those little plants "shoesting" up (remember Green Acres... Mrs. Douglas' cute little foreign accented remarks...sorry, I digress).... and then enjoying those fresh off the vine tomatoes for lunch or supper or whenever. Ummmmmmmm.. I can't wait... but, first I must get them planted.

Yankees 5 - Red Soxs 3
No, I'm not talking about the major league baseball teams in the Northeast, I'm talking about our own little leagues teams. It was a close game and a good game. But, we knew it was going to be. Both teams were undefeated, now only one is, the Yankees, which is Jason Nielsen's team. Micah is on the Red Soxs. All the boys did a great job! Good going guys. Keep playing hard and doing your best, for the Lord!

Looking forward to the Weekend
I hope to see everyone this coming Lord's Day! Please be in prayer about our services. I will be continuing my series in Revelation on Sunday morning with the letter to the sixth church, the Church at Philadelphia. Sunday evening we will be beginning new study in our Discipleship Training class called "The Acts 1:8 Challenge: Empowering the CHURCH to Be on MISSION." I hope that you will consider being a part of that study. In the evening service I will be preaching on the post-resurrection appearances of the Lord Jesus to His disciples.

I hope to see you all there. Prayer for our services. We wouldn't want to miss out on anything that God is going to do in our fellowship.

Wonderful Easter Weekend Activities

The Easter Egg Hunt

Saturday afternoon we had about 40 children attend our annual Easter Egg Hunt. It was a great time to be had by all. What a joy it is to see our children scampering about looking for those prize eggs. I don't know how many eggs were hidden, but they found most of them. I know of two that were not found, because Mr. Bilbo Davis found them yesterday while he was mowing the yard. So, everyone did really well. We also had a very nice Easter bunny present who did a great job. I know the children enjoyed him as well. I would like to recognize and thank the New Journey Class for their leadership and hard work for our annual egg hunt. Jessie and Gina Nielsen and all the gang did a terrific done this year. Keep up the good work guys. We appreciate your faithfulness.

Sunday Services
We had 35 present for our 7:00 AM Sunrise Service Easter Sunday morning. I was very glad to see that crowd come out to commemorate and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior in such a way. All of you are to be commended. Not many people like to do that kind of thing anymore. Time was when there would be as many for sunrise service as for regular morning service, but that is just how things are today. What a wonderful way to greet anyday, early in the morning.

Our 10:00 AM Easter services was also a big hit. Our children's choir lead by Mrs. Gina Jones did really well and we enjoyed the children' presentation very much. Thank you children and Mrs. Gina for your hard work. We look forward to see you all again very soon.

Mrs. Marlene Stanley performed a piano solo that we all enjoyed very much. Then our adult choir presented "Behold The Lamb." I believe it was amazing. I know that everyone present enjoyed this musical very much. I heard comments like, "its the best they have ever done." Thanks to our fearless leader Milton Ringle for putting up we us and helping us to do the best we could for our risen Lord. Button Cooper and Gina Jones both performed solos and Kathleen Parker and myself did the narration. I know that Kathleen did a wonderful job. We also thank Michael Ford for working so hard, not only during the performance, but also during all those nights of practice. Michael, we couldn't have done it without you. Great job everyone! I know that our great and mighty God and the Lord Jesus Christ were honored and glorified!

The Bad News
All I can say is this....yesterday was tax day.... enough said, except to say, I'm still bleeding.

Little League Baseball
Several of our children are on little league baseball teams and several of our men are coaches on those teams. Micah is on the Red Soxs, Jason Nielsen coaches the Yankees, on which his son "Brother" also plays. Those two teams are undefeated and play against one another this Thursday. What a game that is going to be! Jessie Nielsen coaches a team of 6-8 years olds called the Astros.... who else would they be with Jessie coaching them. Last night his team had they first "non-loss," that is they tied. I know there are other playing and coaching, but right now my feeble mind looses their names. As soon as I get them back, I'll put a word in for them.

We also have some of our youth playing baseball with the Delhi Charter school. I understand they have a big district game this Wednesday afternoon. Play hard guys. Do you best for your team and for the Lord. Congratulations to all our boys and men playing baseball this summer.

Everyone have a great day! Pray for one another.

Good Friday

Why Do They Call It "Good" Friday?

I've oftern wondered that, haven't you. It was the darkest dark in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, the day of His sacrificial death. It was the day our Lord Jesus took our sins upon Himself, "He than knew no sin, became sin for us." Because of that, the Father turned His back on His own son, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" the Lord Jesus asked at one point. It certainly doesn't seem so good, at least for the Lord Jesus at this point.

So What is "Good" About it?
The one thing that I can think is that Jesus, infact, did take our sins upon Himself, thereby making a way for we who have sinned and therefore become separated from God, to have the relationship with God that He desired and for which we were created in the first place. That certainly is "good" news.... isn't that what the gospel is all about? So it was a "good" thing that Jesus willingly gave Himself that day for us.

Origins of the term "Good Friday"
I looked the term up in several resources. Apparently the origins of the English "Good Friday" are rather unclear. To make a long story short, some believe that the day was originally known as "God's Friday," a reference to the crucifixion event. There are references to the German term which means "mourning," as the disciples certainly did on that day so long ago. They mourned the death of Jesus, the one with whom they had walked for some three years and the others that knew Him. It was a day of mourning. Today in Europe it is "Mourning Friday." We too certainly mourn the fact that Jesus had to die in order that we could have forgiveness and life. It is a day of fasting for many denominations and people individually. And it is certainly a day of prayer and reflection and the events of this day so long ago.

What Will You Do Today?
Will you be thinking about what Jesus did for you on that day? Will we spend some time in prayer; will we perhaps even fast? How about attending some religious ceremony. I know that there will be prayer services of all kinds during this day. I have had candlelight services at churches which I have pastored in the past, as well as attending them at other churches. How about private services in the home with our families to commemorate this day; we should certainly do that together.

However you celebrate it (if that indeed is the proper term), remember that Jesus died in order that we might have life eternal and abundant, the forgiveness of sins and a secure future with our God.

May God bless each of us today as we continue to love and serve Him, who loved and served us, and ultimately gave Himself as a sacrifce for each of us. Maranatha, even so, come quickly Lord Jesus.

Serving the Lord Daily

My Day Ahead

Yesterday, I was telling Micah about a couple of meetings that I had to attend. One was an Associational Nominating Committee meeting at FBC Rayville, which was yesterday afternoon and the other is this morning at the Missions Office in West Monroe for a FOCUS meeting, formerly known as "Ridgecrest on the Ouachita." Micah's reply was, "All you do is go to meetings." It sure seems that way sometimes. But, that is life. There IS always some kind of meeting to attend. It is the nature of the beast, the beast being life, or work or any combination thereof. Some meetings I actually enjoy, some are just to be endured. But, it is part of my work, my ministry. Meetings allow me to use the gifts that God has placed within me to carry out HIS ministry that HE started within me. And I'm glad to be able to do that. What a blessing it is to be a child of God (AMEN?), what a blessing is it to have the gifts of God actually dwell within us, what a blessing it is to be able to us them.

Your Ministry
What gift(s) has God given you? Are you using them effectively, for HIS glory? Take an inventory today of those gifts. If you don't know what they are, find out. How, you say. Ask. The giver of the gifts will be glad to inform you of the gift(s) that He would have you to use, not only for His glory, but for the good of the Body of Christ. The gifts that He has given you ARE your ministry. We don't create a ministry for God, He has a ministry (aka. service) for each of us already designed. We need to find out what that is and get in on it. Are you accomplishing the ministry that He has already designed for you? The other side of that is, are you attempting to carry out a ministry (service) that He did not design for you? There is something for us all to think about.

Word of the Day
Every day, on my computer, I have a "word of the day." Yesterday the word was "rusticate." That is an interesting sounding word. It came for a word that originally meant "country," as to be in the country. I like that. To rusticate means to be banished to or place yourself in a country setting. I'm for it. I think later on today Anita and I will rusticate for a while out at her dad and mom's old place. Smell the fresh air, listen to the cows and birds and bees. Yes, we have a couple of hives of bees out there. And, to admire the work that we have been able to do out there in the past few months. One day, we'd like to have everyone over for a little get together. But, first there still remains a lot of work to be done. (We'll gladly accept some help there, hint....hint...)

Everyone have a great day. Let's continue the work, the service, the ministry that our Lord has for us. Love you all.... God bless you.

It Was An Exciting Weekend

The Living Lord's Supper

I am so excited about the outcome of our dramatic presentation of The Living Lord's Supper. In both morning and evening services our guys did a tremendous job! What a wonderful portrayal of our Lord's last meal with His disciples. I can't stop thinking about how it would have been like to actually have been there. This is as close to it on this earth that we will be. For all who were in attendance, I know that they were blessed, as were we in the presentation. I think God was pleased also.

The Congregation
We had a near full house for the morning service. Sunday School attendance was pretty good, 116 I think it was. Thank God for those who are so very faithful in their Bible Study hour attendance. Encourage you class mates to be there the next time that your class meets. Remember, that will not be this coming Lord's Day.....no bible study hour. I was a little disappointed that there was no apparent response to the Lord's invitation following the presentation of the gospel through this medium. The gospel DID go forth. But then, I ask myself that question each and every time I preach. Why is there no apparent response to God's word? Is it I? Is it I? (Sorry, couldn't help myself).

The Week as a whole
It was a very busy week last week. Meeting and church related activities abounded. I even cancelled a trip out of town just to cut down on the going and to spend time with my family last Monday and Tuesday. Instead of going to Alexandria for a board meeting at Louisiana College, Anita, Micah and I spent last Monday going to see and movie and eating out. I was a very good day for the Duchesne family. We need to spend as much time, quality time, together as a family as we can, don't you think?

Baseball!
Something else that Micah and I were able to do together last week was attend a Texas Ranger baseball game, along with Jessie Nielsen. Our youth invited us to come and join them in Arlington and watch the game with them. Thanks to our youth and Tanya, Jason, Annette and David for asking us to join you! We really did enjoy it, even though it was pretty chilly, and we didn't really dress for that. But, we made it anyway. It was a great game, even though Texas lost to the Detroit Tigers 5-2. Just being in that stadium with church family and friends made it all worth it! We even got a free Texas Ranger's cap. We really enjoyed it. Hopefully, we can make another game before the summer is gone.

I'll write more about last week later. Everyone have a blessed day. Please be in prayer for our choir as they prepare for this coming Lord's Day presentation of "Behold the Lamb."

Strenghten that which you have

I'm back again

Yeap, I've been gone a while again. There is no particular reason, other than.....dare I say it....laziness. After all, it doesn't take THAT much time to write this little journal does it? It doesn't take THAT much effort, does it? And, it isn't THAT important, is it? No....No....YES! Every day, since my last post, I have said to myself, "Self, you need to go write in your blog." Then I answered myself...."I'll do it in a moment." And the moment never came. There was always something else that "came up." And it got put off and put off and put off and....well, you get the picture.

My brother in Christ, Jessie Nielsen, will prod me every once in a while to get back to it. So, brother, here it is..... keep prodding. We all need a "prodder," don't we. We may not actually appreciate the concern at that very moment. But, we do need someone to encourage us in the faith, not to grow weary in well doing..... not to be.... lazy. Thanks brother I appreciate your faithfulness.

Reflections on Sunday's Sermon
I was also thinking about part of my sermon Sunday morning. Remember, Jesus told the church at Sardis, that dead church, to strenghten that which remained, but was about to die. That's what I'm doing this morning, strenghtening something which remains to be done, but could possibly die....from neglect on my part. Like that church at Sardis, God had started something days earlier which that church had started to neglect and they were going to let it die. Someone had to encourage them. That is what Jesus was doing through his preacher, John.

What Remains to be done at DBC
Okay, so here I am back at it again, with the resolve to not grow wreary in well doing and do as I had committed to myself, to God and to my flock and write in my blog....everyday. What about you? What "thing" at some point in the past had you started, or rather God started withing you, that you have for whatever reason neglected to finish or continue? I don't know what that is, but you do....and God does. Let's all get back to it. There is a job to be done. There are promises to keep and there is our God to honor and glorify.

Opeing Week of Baseball
It's here! Opening week. So far, the Rangers lost and the Yankees won. I know those two for sure. And one more thing I know for sure, well, pretty sure, we have the tickets in hand. We're going to see the Texas Rangers play the Detroit Tigers at Ranger Stadium this Friday. Alright!

Everyone have a blessed day! God is so good.

Yeap, Spring Is Here

A Wet Monday
We know that spring is definitely here, because its raining. It's been raining for three days. But such is spring in the south. But, it's good for the land. We'll need the rain for those crops and gardens.....and it will give us something to do....mow our yards. After a long winter we kind of enjoy doing that though, don't we. Everything around us is "greening up." It's beautiful. So, we don't really mind these days of rain because they are good for us. Kind of like some other things that God sends into our lives that we don't necessarily enjoy at the time they are sent, but they are good for us and we come to realize that later on. So, enoy the rain and look forward to those beautiful crops and gardens and green, green grasses of home.

Another wonderful Lord's Day
Despite the rain, we had another great day in the Lord yesterday as we gathered together for worship. Even the crowd wasn't bad considering the weather. As a pastor, I really appreciate our folks braving the elements to come out and be in God's house, as they should. We were graced by the presence of some guests yesterday. I pray that they enjoyed their time with us. A pastor is always concerned about everything being just right and making our guests feel welcome into our fellowship.

The Dilemma of Preaching
Which brings me to another concern. Yesterday, I must admit, I was concerned about how my message (not really my message, but God's message, since it was His Word that I was delivering). After the service I became concerned that I had preached too hard and too long. Most of the time I don't really think about those things. I try to keep my sermons to "just the right lenght." Most of the time that is about 30 minutes. I went a little longer than that yesterday, but not on purpose. I didn't realize that it was after noon before I concluded my message. I would apologize for that, but I'm not sorry that I did it. It was God's message and I believe that I delievered all that I was supposed to say. Nevertheless, I was concerned what our guests thought. I was also concerned what, not only our guests, but what our fellowship thought about some of the things that I said. Did I come across a little harshly? Did I speak the truth in love? If I did come across to harshly, I do apologize for that. If I didn't speak the truth in love I confess that, not only to our congregation, but to God, to whom I am ultimately responsible. I did speak the truth; it was God's Word. But I really didn't mean to sound so arrogant, so brazen, so..... unloving and uncaring. I love people; I love our folks and I love our guests. I'm just so concerned, as God is, about The Truth being contained... keep rightly, in our fellowship and in every church. God forgive me if I did not communicate Your Truth well.

Our grandchildren
Anita and I had the priviledge of "speaking" to our youngest grand-daughter, Abigail Hope, whom we call Abby, this morning. Our oldest son Matthew, our grands dad, had to say home with one of them, Cody, because he has that old bad bug that is going around. Seems that it is sweeping through their home, as it is many of our homes. Anyway, while speaking with Matthew he put Abby on the phone. Abby is about 7 months old. Matt put the phone to her ear and we talked, Abby listened. Then she began to laught and coo and make all those wonderful sounds that babies make. Aren't they great! What a pleasure it was to talk with Abby this morning. We can't wait to see them again. We'll do that as soon a school is out. It will be a trip to Kingsville!

Birthday Parties
We attended two birthday parties this past weekend. We took Micah to "Brother" Jason Nielsen's party at Bayou Divers in West Monroe Saturday. Had a great time there. Yesterday, we went to Lynda Carol Nielsen's party at her home with..... well, everyone it seems. Well, except for Mrs. Shirley and Mr. Samie. Mrs. Shirley had to stay home ill. Bless her heart! Anyway, we all had a great time at the Nielsen's with Lynday Carol. It was also Paul Wells birthday and I understand that they had party in his honor at their home. We didn't get to make that one, although it sure would have been good. Happy Birthday to all of you! And many happy returns.

Baseball Season!
We're going to a Rangers game! Alright!!! Our youth will be making a trip to Arlington on April 6-7. They are going to see the Texas Rangers play the Detroit Tigers at Arlington stadium. Jessie Nielsen is going to make a trip out there with Micah and I to see the game with them. Man, are we excited! Most of the youth will stay in order to go to Six Flags on Saturday. We will be coming back that night, as will some of the youth early the next morning. We have dress rehearsal for the Lord's Supper Saturday night and I must make sure all is ready for that. Some of our youth have a baseball game on Saturday, so they'll be coming in for that.

Yeap, spring is definitely here! Are are we every busy. But, isn't that they way it always is?

Everyone have a great day! Take time for the Lord and tell someone about His Love.

Watching The Garden Grow... and other things

Spring Fever
It is definitely spring time in the south. I know, spring doesn't offically start until the 20th, but it sure feels like spring, doesn't it. Warm days followed by some rain followed by some cool weather only to warm up again. Such is springtime in the south. I love it! It brings to mind those days of childhood for me. My two brothers and I grew up in the country more or less about 8 miles south of Bastrop. There was nothing but pasture land all around us. It was wonderful to be able to finally get out and walk those pastures withouth the burden of a coat. What wonderful days they were. But, they were really no more wonderful that today is. As someone once said, "Today is the first day of the rest of my life." And right that person was. We have some wonderful memories and some not so wonderful memories that we carry with us. Those days themselves are gone, never to be lived again....no matter how hard we may try to do so. I know I can't, because my body tells me I can't. But, NOW are the best days of our lives... today is the day we have enjoyed and tommorow is the days to which I look forward.

Working in the Yard
Anita and I spent a little time today working in the yard out at her dad and mom's old place. How we love to do that. It is tiring but very satisfying. It just doesn't make sense. In the paragraph above I was speaking of those wonderful days as a child. Yard work was just that, work. There was nothing satisfying about it. I guess you could even say that I hated it. How much difference a few years can make, can it not? Anyway, it was good to get back to it. My back held up wonderfully. I'll be careful, I promise. So much needs to be done. And it is a constant battle with the weeds and vines, isn't it. I know you know what I'm talking about. We'll keep working till the work is done, whenever that is. Next winter I guess.

Revelation Study
I am continuing to enjoy my preparations for both our Discipleship Training Class and our worship service as I preach through the Book of Revelation. I hope many of you are keeping up on your own studies. This week I'll be preaching from Revelation 2:12-17. That is the section in which the Lord Jesus tell the church at Pergamos that He knows all about them, as He does all of His churches. The church at Pergamos was the wordly church. We'll be hearing how the world can creep into our church life and our daily lives. I pray that I can get more of the world out of my daily life and live it for Jesus. To Him be the honor and glory for ever and ever.

Everyone have a blessed evening. It's time for Prayer meeting. I hope to see you there!

I'm Back

A Wonderful Lord's Day
We had a wonderful Lord's Day yesterday. Preachers usually judge how "good" a day was by how many were present for Sunday School and the worship service. I ceased to do that long ago and continue to try not to do it. Numbers do not indicate that the day was good. I have seen days were the numbers were "good," that is there was a large crowd there, and yet the Spirit was not seem to be presnet. It was just sort of a ritual thing for which a lot of people happend to show up. On the other hand, there have been days where the crowd was small, and yet the hand of God was evident in the congregation. I'm not saying that smaller numbers are better. I love to see lots of folks come to church. But yesterday was both I think. The numbers were good, not great but good. But there was also a good spirit in our fellowship. We had a number of guests with us (some people call them visitors, but I prefer to call them guests). We are always glad to see guests join us and we welcome them back any time. May the Lord lead them to join us as we grow together in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The singing was wonderful, the spirit of the congregation was wonderful as well. Even the preaching was good, if I do say so myself. The reason I believe it was good, was not in the way in which it was delivered, even though I do hope it was enjoyable to those who heard it. But because it was a good word, because it was the Word of God. We have been preaching through the Revelation of Jesus Christ. What a wonderful study it is. I am enjoying it altogether. I hope our folks are also.

Hospital Report
I understand that Mika Monroe was able to come home today. She has been in LSU Monroe for a number of days, but we are glad to know that she was able to return to her home. We'll continue to pray for her.

Mrs. Geraldine Tatum was in the hospital for one night a week or so ago. She continues to feel weak, but was with us yesterday. We love you Mrs. Geraldine and are praying for you.

Hoot Green was in Delhi for a couple of days, but is home now also.

Angie Tatum is in Houston once again for some tests. We want to remember her.

Tracey Huffman is continuing to recover at home and gaining strenght. We're continuing to pray for you Tracey. Hang in there.

More later. Pray for all our folks and those unspoken requests also.

New Book I'm reading
I started a new book the other day and I'm really enjoying. It's a book on preaching, but good none the less. Some of you would enjoy also, even though you aren't a preacher. It's called The Supremacy of God in Preaching by John Piper. It isn't a very big book, as far as size goes, but it packs a punch. Piper gets right to the point about what preaching should really be about... all about God, for that IS the message of the gospel. It isn't for our good, it is for HIS glory.. all of it. Anyway, that you might want to know that.. it's a good book.

Visitation Time
Well, got to go for now. It's time to visit. Incidentally, we have church visitation every Monday evening at 7 PM. Come and join us. We could use the help and many of our church members could use the experience. I don't say that in a condesending or judgmental way. You can't learn to witness or visit if you don't do it. So, come on and join us. You'll be blessed.

Have a great evening and God bless each and every one of you!

Is It Spring Already?

It's Been a Beautiful Day!
I pray that you have had a great day. It has been a beautiful day indeed. I started my day very early today. Mrs. Cecilia Hartley had shoulder surgery at Ouachita Surgical Center in West Monroe at about 7:30 AM. She did really well the Dr. said. She will be in there tonight and should be home tomorrow. Continue to pray for her.

While we were there Carol Till came in for a little surgery on her index finger that she hurt last Friday, I believe it was. Chuck said that it went well. Carol, we'll be praying for you too!

While we're talking about the sick, Mr. George Patrick is in Delhi as of today with congestive heartfailure. He'll be there a couple of days he said. Please pray for George and Mrs. Lillian.

Also found Albert Green, Mr. Melvin's brother was in there also with a sinus infection. We'll pray for Albert also.

On my way to teach JBS at Epps tonight
We've been enjoying our time together at Epps Baptist Church this week studying the book of Nehemiah together. What a wonderful study it has been at each of the churches at which I have had the pleasure and opportunity to teach God's Word. I look forward to preaching through the book soon at Dunn.

My Back is still doing well.
Thank the Lord for that! I've even had the opportunity to work in the yard some. Looking forward to more of that. Spring is indeed on the way! I just can't wait, can you?

Speaking of Spring
Baseball season is almost here. I read this morning about Roger Clemens throwing 66 pitches to the Houston minor league team, of which his son is a member. I can't remember his name right now, but his son hit a homer off of one of his dad's best fast balls. How about that dad! Roger got him back on the next pitch though. The 43 years old "Rocket' isn't all washed up yet. I hope he plays this season and does well.

Got to go. Have a great evening everyone! God bless you abundantly!

Doc Gives Clean Bill of Health

Doc Says I can resume life as usual
Yesterday I went for a checkup for my back. It's been six weeks since my back surgery. God has really blessed me during this time of recovery! I haven't had a pain pill for about three weeks. I'm getting around real well. The doctor told me yesterday that I could do whatever I wanted to, using common sense of course. One thing he told me that kind of bothered me. He told me I was getting older and couldn't do things the way I used to do them. I had to be careful the way I lifted and so forth. He didn't have to tell me THAT. I know I'm getting older. He is this guy, who looks like a kid, tells me that I'm getting older. Can you imagine that?

Back to the Farm
So, what did Anita and I do yesterday afternoon? We went back out to the farm and worked in the yard! Man, was it good to be able to do some yardwork again. I've missed it this winter. My waistline tells me, and everyone else, that. There is still so much to do. One thing that I wanted to get accomplished this winter was to clear off a couple of fence rows. Guess what. They are still there and still need clearing off. No one came it did it for me, so I still have the opportunity to do it. And I will get it done, sooner or later. By the way, I'm a little stiff this morning. Anita told me that I tried to do it all at once. I tried to behave, and I will. I don't need another surgery.

Hospital and other news
I visited with Mr. Clayton Cooped Sr. yesterday. He is in St. Francis with heart irregularities. He was doing pretty well, other than that. Mrs. Ceclia Hartley had a heart test yesterday also, in preparations for a shoulder surgery that she is having next Tuesday. She said that test came out okay and she is good to go for the surgery. Also talked with Tracey Huffman. She is scheduled for neck surgery next Friday. Please be in prayer for these. There are still lots of folks out there with the flu and related illnesses. Pray for them also.

I understand the Thomas twins are doing good. Margie and John are proud grands again and are doing their part to help. Hang in there Thomas family; God is blessing!

Looking forward to the Lord's Day
This Sunday morning I will be preaching "A Vision of Christ." What a glorious sight the Apostle John had while "in the Spirit" one Lord's Day. It is my prayer that we will experience that same wonderful vision of Christ as we gather to worship on this Lord's Day. I pray also that whoever comes will be "in the Spirit."

Sunday evening I will be at Epps Baptist Church teaching our January Bible Study, The Book of Nehemiah: Serving God with Determined Faith. I am thrilled that Dr. John Traylor would ask me to come and do this for them. Pray for me as I teach and ask our brothers and sisters there at Epps not only hear the Word of God, but maybe even experience revival as we study the Word together.

A Couple of Books That I Am Reading
Thought you might like to know what I am reading lately. Apart from all the books that I read associated with my sermon preparations, I am also reading "Fools Gold" by John MacArthur. The subtitle for this book gives the theme: Discerning Truth in an Age of Error. Dr. MacArthur quotes a woman he once talked with who said, "God doesn't care what you believe, as long as you are sincere." I've heard that statement many times, in one form or another, haven't you. Or something like this, "All religions are the same and lead to the same place." In the introduction of this book Dr. MacArthur says, "To those who accept the Bible as God's Word, the folly of that thinking should be immediately evident." Unfortunately, it is not evident to many who call themselves Christians. There must be a basis for truth. For the Christian that truth is the Word of God. We must be discerning in what we read, hear, see or preceive in any way in our daily lives.

Another book that I've begun reading is called "Renovation of The Heart," by Dallas Willard. The subject of his book is what he calls "Spiritual Formation." I haven't gotten very far into this book yet. I must admit that even before I began reading the book, I read a negative review of another one of Mr. Willard's books that, apparently was about the same subject. So, as I read this book, I'll read with caution what he has to say. But, shouldn't we do that with everybook we read, save the Word of God itself? I'll let you know how it comes out.

May God bless each of us with a great day! Until we come together, maranatha! Even so, come Lord Jesus.

Weather is the News today.... and yesterday

Winter shows up in a big way
Preachers dread cold wet weather because it brings havoc to church attendance. But, for Dunn BC yesterday, it wasn't as bad as it could have been, or has been before. Despite the cold, wet weather, we have 95 brave souls in attendance for Sunday School and a few more came in for morning worship. Bless all of you! As for Discipleship Training last evening, THAT is a differenct story! But, we survived and those who were in attendance were blessing with the worship, sermon and fellowship. I look forward to seeing many of you this Wednesday evening for our mid-week prayer meeting.

Speaking of Sermons
Yesterday I preached a sermon on Wrestling with God. I believe with all my heart I was "led of God" to preach that sermon. I believe that there was someone who has been struggling with God in some area of their life. Even though there was no immediate response in our service, I believe that God is going to continue to deal with that person or persons..... and I pray He does.

We continued our study in The Book of The Revelation last night. It was interesting, I think, as we studied the Isle of Patmos. I found some pictures on the web this past week of the island, in it's modern day dress of course. But, one could still get a sense of what John experienced on the same island just a little less than 2000 years ago. The bigger challenge is to communicate what John DID experience while he was there, just as he was challenged to communicate to his readers what he himself experienced. He did his best, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to record what he saw. We will continue to do our best to understand that communication, under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. God help us to understand your Word, in order that we might love you more and be more obedient servants and effective witnesses, even as John was effective.

One More JBS
I have another opportunity to teach the Book of Nehemiah this coming weekend. Our friend and brother in Christ and my mentor, Dr. John Traylor, has asked me to come and teach our JBS to Epps Baptist Church beginnning this Sunday evening. I am extremely humbled to be asked to do this. It is going to be like the student teaching the teacher. Please pray for me this week as I prepare for the awesmore responsibility and priviledge.

Baseball Season is on it's way
It won't be long now... isn't everyone just waiting with baited breath for those infamous words, "Play Ball!"? I am!

Everyone have a great day and stay warm!

Technologically Challenged

I'm Back!

After several days absence, I'm back. Here's the story. Last Thursday I think it was we had some storms in the area. Lightning knocked out our internet connection. It was late Saturday before we got it back and I just didn't have time to write during the weekend. The first two days of this week have been as bad, as far as having time to write. But, I'm making time today. It's good to be back.

Welcome to the World of Computers
You know, for those of us who have come to depend upon a computer in our daily life, to be without it sure makes life difficult, doesn't it. It isn't as if we can't do without them, for we did before. And to compound the problem, even with the computer running, we have become so dependent of the accessiblity of the internet that when it isn't working, we're in a quandry. We feel "cut off" from the rest of the world, do we not? But that's true only in one sense, for we still have a world around us. One thing that computers and the internet have done is to make our world both smaller and larger. It isn't uncommon to be able to communicate ("You've got mai!") with others around the world daily. What is the price of that convenience? Sometimes it is to neglect those closest to us and the things that are right around us in order to live in our larger world. Such is life in this larger and smaller world today. Whatever happened to the "simple life?" I don't know, I guess it went the way of the horse an buggy. We don't want to go back to those days either, do we.

January Bible Study
Since Sunday I've been teaching our JBS for this year at First Baptist Tallulah. We've been having a great time there in this wonderful book of the Bible. What a priviledge it is to be able to teach and share God's Word anywhere. The crowd there has been good and the people seem to be really enjoying the study. It really bewilders me that anyone would want to listen to be teach or say anything. But, I thank God for the opportunity. I also thank God for our congregation at Dunn Baptist Church for allowing me to use the gifts that God has using me to teach the Book of Nehemiah at FBC Tallulah this week. And thanks to Bro. Jay Morgan for filling in for me this past Sunday. I know our folks really appreciate you.

Our Study in Revelation
Don't forget that we will be continuing our study in the Book of Revelation this Sunday evening both in Discipleship Training and during our evening worship. Stay read up in your studay books and your bible and prayed up to receive a blessing from God as we study together.

Everyone have a great and blessed day in the Lord. I'll be back tomorrow also, the Lord willing.

Making the Same Commitments.....Again

I've Been Here Before
One of the tools I'm using for my daily devotions is "The Vision of His Glory" by Mrs. Ann Graham Lotz. Our Discipleship Training group is using this book and video series on Sunday evenings. One thing I like about this book is that it causes the reader, if they faithfully perform the study work, to actually STUDY the Word of God, in this case The Book of Revelation. One section of the study calls for the reader to pinpoint what God is saying to them through the Word, then it asks "what are you going to do about it?" Tough question because it demands a response. God's Word always demands a response. I said these very words:

"I, once again, commit to live unto God, rather than myself. I will be faithful in prayer, in the study of God's Word, faithfully in teaching and preaching and faithful in sharing God's love with others."

Have you said those words or something like them before? More than once? Twice? How many times? In the last 28+ years I've said them hundreds, perhaps thosands of times. I wonder if God ever tires of hearing them? I think not, for I know it is God's desire that we be like Him.

Life is a War
Why must we say those same words over and over? Because we fight a battle of flesh and spirit. It's a daily struggle, isn't it? I know it is with me. I know that we have the victory, the ultimate victory. The war has already been won, by Christ on the cross and His glorious resurrection. But there are still battles to be fought every day.

Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose
I wished that I could say that I win every battle. I KNOW the WAR is won, but in those little every day confrontations with the wiles of our adversary, Satan. I win some, I lose some. When I do win, I know its because I'm "walking in the Spirit" and being very careful how I walk. But when I lose, I know it's because I am living according to the flesh and not being careful how I walk. When I win, I praise God for the victory; when I lose......how I wished I could say I immediately run to God to ask and receive forgiveness. Sometimes that takes a while. But I thank God for this....I do eventually do that and say "those words" over again. And I mean them every time. Thank God that I can say "those words" and become just a little more like Him each time.

Life Back to Normal
Micah went back to school today. Hooray! Not that we didn't want him at home with us, but he needs the education and we need to get back to "normal," whatever that is.

No More Telegrams
I read today in an article in the New York Times that on January 25, the last telegram ever was sent by Western Union itself. The end of an era has come. Funny, I was watching an old western recently, as I often do, and a holdup was being staged. One of the preparations was, yep, you guessed it, to cut the telegraph lines. As the line was being cut, I thought about the fact that at that time in history the only man made objects to litter the landscape were telegraph poles and lines. Now, they are no longer of use. Of course, it wasn't too long after the good ole "cowboy and Indian days," that telegraph went wireless and those poles were no longer needed. Now, those telegrams are no longer needed. We have email and cell phones. Now the land is littered with cell phone towers... nothing has changed. Anyway, kind of sad to think, no one will ever hear those infamous words again....."Western Union," or "TELEGRAM!"

Parting Thought
I read this little line the other day by the late great apologist G.K. Chesterton:

"There are two ways to get enough: one is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less."

Time on My Knees
I'm continuing to study the Book of Nehemiah, our January Bible Study this year. Nehemiah was indeed an amazing man. He had strong leadership traits, but most of all he was amazing because he sought to please God in all that he did. One of the most outstanding areas of his life in which this is evident is his prayer life. One of the books that I have been reading lately is Charles Swindoll's book on Nehemiah entitled "Hand Me Another Brick." It stands to reason that Dr. Swindoll would name his book that because the Book of Nehemiah is primarily about the rebuilding of the walls and gates of Jerusalem following the exile of Judah. Anyway, Nehemiah did one thing before he did anything esle in his life.... he prayed about what he was going to do. He asked God about it, sought His direction and wisdom, before he made one move. I believe that is what made Nehemiah an amazing man... he was a man of prayer, as well as a man of God.

In his book, Dr. Swindoll wrote about prayer and particularly reasons people give for not praying. The number one reason most people don't spend more time in prayer is this, "I don't have time." What should we do when we don't have time to pray? Make time! Get up earlier. That has been my desire for a long time, but I haven't been very successful at it. I have always been a night owl, though the older I get, the shorter those night hours are. Anyway, Dr. Swindoll quoted the great missionary Hudson Taylor, who founded the great China Inland Mission. Taylor said that the sun never rose for forty years in China but that God didn't find him on his knees in prayer for that great land. Would to God it was so for me. I'm going to try harder. You try too, okay?

Hospital Updates
Mrs. Louise Tibbs went home from Delhi yesterday. Mrs. Carolyn Emsminger, that's Cheryl and Marilyn's sister, is still in Delhi. Mrs. Ceclia's daughter Diane went home from Baptist in Jackson; Our son Micah stayed home ill again today, but hope he can return to school tomorrow. The Thomas twins are still in St. Francis. Alxis is doing well and the last I heard was that Adrianna was doing a little better, but they are still watching her. I also visited with Mrs. Patty Sue Black in the Delhi hospital. There are also many others with the winter crud. Let's pray for all of these.

Delhi Livestock Show
We didn't attend the livestock show this past weekend, mainly because of the inclement weather and the fact that Micah was already ill. It seems like February always brings dreary gray rainy days and the Livestock show. It seems that way to me. It sure reminds me of the livestock show of 1976. You may not remember that year in particular. I do; but there was an event that, for me, was attached to it. At that time my dad and mom, Juanez McPherson Duchesne, lived in a big old house that used to be right next to the old Hall Hotel right on Hwy 80. Neither of the houses are there now. Anyway, I remember going to the Livestock show with Anita and our oldest, and at that time only son Matthew, who was almost 2 years old. My youngest brother Charles was with us, if memory serves me correctly and maybe our cousin Joe "Willie" Tatum. Dad was with us also. We all walked over to the fairgrounds together. But mom wasn't with us. She wasn't feeling well and hadn't been for several weeks. Not too many days later, after she had been diagnosed with pneumonia, we found out that she actually had cancer. So, for me even after 30 years, the Livestock show will always have a little bit of sadness attached to it. I'll never forget THAT Livestock show anyway.

Lion's Club Meeting
Each Tuesday the Delhi Lion's Club meets at the Delhi hospital. I became a member shortly after I moved here two years ago. It's a good civic organization that not only tries to promote the wellfare of the town, in this case Delhi, but also helps people with various illness. One very important "ministry" that it carries out is the Louisiana Lion's Club Eye Foundation. We try to help people with various eye diseases and glasses and so forth. The Delhi Lion's club has helped several people recently with their eye problems. They also recycle old eye glasses, so if you have any lying around, find a Lion and have yours recycled.

Parting Thought
I read this today that got me to thinking...... "Some people get lost in thought because it is unfamiliar territory." I know exactly what they mean. God bless each of you.

Just Another Monday?

Flu Season Has Struck
This morning Anita has taken Micah to the doctor. He has a sore throat and a bad cough. He has had the cough for several days, but just developed the sore throat yesterday afternoon. He actually wanted to go to the doctor this morning, so you know he really feels bad. I have been battling the same symtoms for a couple of days, but my medicine seems to be holding down. Please pray for all of us. There is just too much to do to be sick.

Pray for the Thomas Twins
I am sure that you heard that Brenda and Timothy Thomas had their twin girls last Thursday. Their names are Adrianna Danielle and Alexis Grace. Brenda (and Timothy) is doing fine and the girls are in the Neo-Natal unit at St. Francis. Adrianna has developed a little problem with her stomach. Please be in prayer for her especially and all the Thomas family during this time in the girls young lives.

Also be in prayer for Mrs. Celia Hartley's daughter Diane who is in Baptist in Jackson. Looks like a heart-cath for Diane. Also Mrs. Louise Tibbs is still in Delhi, but may get out today or tomorrow. One more to add to our prayer list is Cheryl and Marilyn's sister Carolyn who they had to bring to the emergency room at Delhi yesterday. May God be with each of these.

The Week Ahead
I will be teaching January Bible study beginning this coming Sunday at FBC Tallulah. It doesn't matter that I've been studying it for months and have already taught it once, I never feel prepared. There will be lots of reading this week. By the way, if you are interested, a few good books that I have used in preparation for teaching the JBS on the Book of Nehemiah are "Hand Me Another Brick" by Charles Swindoll, "Nehemiah: An Expositional Commentary" by James Montgomery Boice, "Nehemiah" from the Word Biblical Commentary Series, " and "Ezra, Nehemiah & Esther" from the New American Commentary Series. Remember, I will also be preaching through the Book of Nehemiah at Dunn BC very soon.

The Steelers Win
If you watched any of the Super Bowl or any television last night or this morning, you know that the Pittsburg Steelers defeated Seattle last night. I probably watched more football, after we got home from church last night, than I have watched all season. I always try to derive a spiritual lesson even from sporting events. One thing I thought about was this; Pittsburg won the Super Bowl dispite the fact that they had a 7 and 5 season. What do you do when things are going as well as they could for you, keep on keeping on.... don't give up. You never know. You may just win the Super Bowl.

Enter the World of Blog

                                                  Enter the World of Blog
                                                        My First Post

I was reading an email the other day on one of the journals which I get online. The article was talking about the effectiveness of "blogs" for pastors and the ministry. It said that "blogs" are wonderful tools of communication. A blog is simply an online journal. This article said that a pastor can share with their congregations what is happening in their lives, making them more transparent. In other words, you, our church members, can see into our lives. I'm not sure that I want people looking into our lives. They may just see how very human that we are. I've said before, if you think that the pastor's family life is always just wonderful, follow us home one day, hang around and see what happens. Anyway, this can be a good thing. Just don't think that I'm going to tell you EVERYTHING.

I can also share and remind you, the reader, of upcoming church events and prayer requests and other church happenings. If you don't want me to tell everyone of a particular prayer request or event, be sure and remind me when you share your request with me......did that make any sense? Yeah, I understood every word of it.

I will be improving and adding to this page as we go, including pictures of family and other events. Who knows, I may even add YOUR picture. You never can tell. So, keep posted.

Anita and I attended Eran and Misty's Wedding Today

Eran Robinson and Misty Holmes were married today at Evangeline Baptist Church in Wildsville, Louisiana yesterday. Anita and I rode down there with Button and Jean Cooper and Jessie & Gena Nielsen. It was a great trip and a wonderful wedding. And hey, the steak we enjoyed didn't hurt a thing, did it guys. Congratulations Eran and Misty!

January Bible Study

I had a great time the first part of this week teaching the Book of Nehemiah at FBC Oak Grove. I believe that those who attended the study had a great and informative time; I know that I had a great time. Thanks for having me Oak Grove! I will also be teaching the JBS at FBC Tallulah beginning Sunday February 12. I will also begin preaching through the Book of Nehemiah very soon. We had a great time a few weeks ago when Bro. Jimmy Harper came and presented the over-view for us, didn't we. Great job Jim! We really appreciate you.

Brenda and Timothy Thomas Have Twins!

For those of you who have not heard, the Thomas' had twin girls on Thursday. Congratulations to Timothy andBrenda and all the family. Brenda should be released Sunday, but the twins will stay for about another week. We'll be praying for you!

Supper Bowl Sunday

I usually don't pay too much attention to who is in the Super Bowl. I do know that it is Super Bowl Sunday and that Seattle and Pittsburg are in it. I don't have a clue as to who will win it and it really doesn't matter to me, although it does to my daughter-in-law. Monica is from Tacoma, so she is going to root for the home team. Go Seahawks. Meanwhile, baseball spring training will begin later this month. Maybe, just maybe we will go see a Rangers or Astros game. What do you say Jessie?

May the Lord bless you all abundantly

Hope to see you each and every Lord's Day!
